Diplomatic relations signed with the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea


During the Our Ocean Conference held in Malta earlier this month, signing ceremonies were held to establish diplomatic relations between Malta and both the Cooks Islands and Papua New Guinea.

Hon. Carmelo Abela, Malta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion, addressed the press present at the ceremony and expressed that Malta is determined to take further develop these new relationships with the Cook Islands’ Prime Minister, Henry Puna; and Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Affairs Minister Rimbink Pato.

Bilateral meetings were held with the President of Seychelles, Danny Faure, to discuss cooperation with the Indian Ocean on waste management measures, as well as issues relating to the maritime industry and financial services. Hon Faure described Malta as, "an island we need to model ourselves on".

Hon Abela also met with Norway’s Climate and Environment Minister, Vidar Helgesen, to discuss Brexit; migration; how Malta and Norway can explore more areas to cooperate; and the single market. In his speech, Dr Abela thanked Minister Helgesen for helping with the funding to conserve the Hypogeum and the modernisation of prison facilities locally.
