The European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020 allows for part-financing of a total of €51 million in grants which have been allocated under the Business Enhance ERDF Grant Schemes. If you have a business, then this money can help you expand it.

For you to be eligible for the EU funding, the project has to be submitted for the approval of the Managing Authority before being implemented. You can use these grant schemes to undertake investment projects aiming at securing your business growth.

There are several schemes which you can benefit from, with specific financing options varying between 20% to 50% of the eligible expenditure.

The scheme-specific maximum grant awarded can range between €5,000 to €500,000. Except for the Start-up Investment Grant Scheme which is only available for micro and small enterprises, the other schemes are also available for medium-sized enterprises.

These schemes can help you in becoming more competitive, innovative and more resilient to market challenges.

**The approval of the grant is at the sole discretion of the relevant authorities.

MAXIMUM GRANT OF €5,000, PART-FINANCING UP TO 50% OF ELIGIBLE EXPENDITURE

This Grant Scheme is aimed at encouraging and supporting enterprises to increase their competitiveness by addressing this gap by adopting e-commerce through online sales in their daily operations.

Target Group

  • Micro Enterprises;

  • Small Enterprises; and

  • Medium-sized Enterprises.

Eligible Actions

The measure shall support investment towards the design, development, implementation and delivery of an e-commerce website and/or a mobile application, or an upgrade of an existing website or mobile application to enable online sales/bookings.  The end product shall result in an e-commerce website/mobile application having a content management system and must comply with current industry-standard e-commerce security practices. 

Eligible Costs

To be eligible the end product shall be an e-commerce website/mobile application that will include a Content Management System that must comply with the current industry standard e-commerce security practices, will incorporate an online product/service catalogue, a shopping cart, a payment or booking system and an integrated e-commerce payment gateway enabling online payments and support at least basic analytics. ​

If eligible, you can get a grant equivalent to 50% of eligible costs, up to €300,000.

  • Leasing/rental of private operational premises;

  • Construction/upgrades on-premises;

  • Purchasing of equipment, machinery & plant;

  • Patents & licenses.

  • Tourism products and services related to niche markets, related to the promotion of natural and cultural heritage, related to social tourism, senior tourists, accessible tourism and active ageing;

  • Boutique Hotels and Palazzini;

  • E-health Solutions;

  • Development and provision of services and products promoting healthy living;

  • Development and provision of services and products promoting active ageing;

  • Development and provision of services and products related to child-day care.

The SME Growth Grant Scheme can help you respond to market demands quickly with a maximum grant of €500,000 so that you can undertake timely interventions.

You can part-finance your eligible expenditure related to the extension of the capacity of an existing establishment, or the setting up of a new establishment.

If you are a micro/small-sized enterprise, you may be eligible for 30% co-financing, whilst if you are a medium-sized enterprise, then the co-financing is of 20%.

Eligible Costs Include: 

  • Leasing/rental of private operational premises;
  • Construction/upgrades on-premises;
  • Purchasing of equipment, machinery & plant;
  • Patents & licenses.

Eligible Industries: any company interested in expanding excluding those operating in:

  • Agriculture;
  • Tobacco;
  • Steel;
  • Energy;
  • Coal;
  • Shipbuilding;
  • Transport;
  • Financial and insurance services;
  • Real Estate activities;
  • Gambling and betting.

**Conditions apply in line with Guidelines issued by the Managing Authority.

The SME Diversification and Innovation Grant Scheme, which has a maximum grant of €200,000 can help you develop focused strategies and implement investment in favour of diversification and fundamental changes.

Not just that, you can also use it towards introducing improved and advanced products/services to the market.

Together with the SME Diversification and Innovation Grant Scheme 

Eligible Costs Include: 

  • Leasing of private operational premises;

  • Construction/upgrades on Private operational premises;

  • Purchasing of equipment, machinery and plant;

  • Patents & licenses.

Eligible Industries: any company interested in expanding excluding those operating in:

  • Agriculture;

  • Tobacco;

  • Steel;

  • Energy;

  • Coal;

  • Shipbuilding;

  • Transport;

  • Financial and insurance services;

  • Real Estate activities;

  • Gambling and betting.

But wishing to diversify into:

  • Manufacture, improvement, assembly, preservation, processing of goods, materials, commodities, equipment;

  • Biotech, Pharma and life sciences;

  • Repair, overhaul and maintenance of pleasure crafts;

  • ICT and Software Development;

  • Eco-innovations and Environmental Solutions;

  • Tourism products and services related to niche markets, related to the promotion of natural and cultural heritage, related to social tourism, senior tourists, accessible tourism and active ageing;

  • Boutique Hotels and Palazzini;

  • E-health Solutions;

  • Development and provision of services and products promoting healthy living;

  • Development and provision of services and products promoting active ageing.

Development and provision of services and products related to child-day care. Additionally, if you qualify, the wage costs of a Change Manager employed specifically through the project can also be taken care of.

The SME Internationalisation Grant Scheme has a maximum grant of €10,000. It is aimed at the internationalization of the Undertaking by introducing their products/services to new markets and by strengthening their international market presence.

If your business is eligible, then this can be done by part-financing 50% of your eligible expenditure.

Eligible Actions

To be eligible, you need to be actively participating in International Business Promotion Fairs held outside Malta, meaning having a stand and exhibiting products/services at the fair.

The incentive supports SMEs actively participating in International Business Promotion Fairs, by covering part of the costs required to set-up and run a stand to exhibit their products/services, by covering a number of costs items including travel costs and Per Diem for up to 2 employees/directors of the Enterprise up to fixed thresholds.

Eligible Costs* Include: 

  • Participation fee;

  • Rental of the exhibition space/stand;

  • Costs related to the construction and setting-up of the stand;

  • Travel Costs;

  • Per Diem;

  • Design and printing of branding material;

  • Shipment of exhibits.

**Conditions apply in line with Guidelines issued by the Managing Authority.

The consultancy has become a constant element supporting enterprises in their decision-making in a globally competitive environment. The SME Consultancy Services Grant Scheme provides a lump sum of €4000.

It is typical of SMEs to have finite resources at their disposal to assist them in their decision making to embark on investment initiatives, and in evaluating their growth and competitive potential. This deficit presents a dependency on outsourcing consultancy services.

The SME Consultancy Service Grant Scheme aims to support Small and Medium Enterprises by providing €4,000 to cover expenses related to consultancy services procured from external consultancy service providers for the development of:

  • Business Plan;

  • Feasibility Study;

  • Organisation and Operations Review;

  • Process and Systems Review.
